 "Battery contact broke" 2009-11-15
By M. E. Nelson (Central Washington)
This saw was part of a combo pack that I purchased. Within a couple of uses the saw would work intermittently. After some trouble shooting I found that one of the battery contacts isn't stiff enough to make contact with the battery. Bending it didn't work because the metal is too weak to stay in place. The service center said that it would take a couple of weeks to get an authorization and then parts. I need this tool everyday. Right now It has a small piece of wood to hold the contact in place.

In 4 months, 2 of the 4 batteries I purchased stopped working. I'm not impressed

 "DeWalt Sawsall" 2009-11-13
By Freddie
This is a top quality saw. I used it for trimming saplings on a trail using a pruning blade. Some trees were up to 3" in diameter. One caution is to have two fully charged batteries. It takes a lot of juice to run the saw and a back up battery is a requirement for a good day in the woods.

 "Love this saw." 2009-10-06
By Paul Harris
First things first: Check with the seller to see if it's the shorter nano base or the longer XPR base. Both types of batteries will work in any 18 volt Dewalt tool, but the shorter nano batteries might look funny if the saw has a longer base, and the old XPR batteries might look funny on the nano base.

Features:

1) 4 blade positions (up, down, left, right)

2) Lock button (black button an inch northeast of the trigger, see picture). This enables you to carry/store the saw with the battery in place without the ability to accidentally pull the trigger and saw something you didn't mean to (your leg, etc).

3) Removable shoe. The round yellow button towards the front allows you to remove the "shoe" (Black metal piece at end of saw).

4) The tool's not that heavy, I cut a high branch off a tree holding the saw with my arm almost vertical without any problem.

Corded vs cordless: I've had a corded sawzall for about ten years. Worked great when I finished my sister's unfinished basement. I used it over and over and over again. If you just want one for demolition work, or any indoor work where there's an outlet, you might want the corded, especially if you'll be using it a lot continuously (won't need to keep recharging batteries).

That said, I've had branches in the yard for years that I never got around to dragging out the 50 or 100 foot extension to use with the corded sawzall. With this cordless Dewalt that I got just a few weeks ago, I've been filling four yard waste cans a week with fallen branches and dead limbs cut with this saw. And no longer will I put 5 foot plus branches out hoping that they take them, just cut them with this saw. It's actually fun (for now at least).

So for a summary of corded vs cordless: If you have a lot of indoor work, maybe get the corded, you won't have to change batteries (and corded are generally more powerful). If you just use it a few minutes at a time, or have a yard with large branches to cut, cordless is the way to go.

For BIG branches, you can get 12 inch blades here: DeWalt DW4804 12-Inch 6 TPI Taper Back Bi-Metal Reciprocating Saw Blade, 5-Pack

Update: As long as the branches aren't too thick, the Black & Decker NPP2018 18-Volt Cordless Electric Pole Chain Saw, 8-Inch Bar is much better at cutting branches. It's faster, quieter, and doesn't vibrate like the sawzalls, and you can reach much higher without a ladder. I doubt you could cut a 7.5 inch diameter branch with it sideways though (I did with the Dewalt "sawzall"). You could try cutting such a branch from a tree straight across, just make sure someone's filming so you can make 600 bucks on one of those video sites when the branch falls the wrong way and destroys your shed/porch/car/etc.

 "Versatile" 2009-07-12
By Sherlock Holmes
I find this tool to be a great help in some every day tasks. I've had it for short time but it's been used to cut limbs from trees that would have required a manual bow saw, roots that an ax couldn't reach on a large stump I'm removing. and miscellaneous rough lumber pieces. Take a look at the Dewalt web site for some insight into how Dewalt builds better tools with metal instead of plastic. I like this tool and the quality.

"Great saw for the weight and price" 2010-01-23
By J. Eiger (Cleveland, Oh)
I've used this saw for cutting old construction lumber, tree branches, plastic pipe, and metal. It works like a champ. Surprising amount of power for a cordless.

One of the other reviewers noted that the blade falls out after a while. I asked a Makita rep about this and he said that sawdust can get into the blade opening (sawing overhead) and this prevents the blade from going in all the way (even though it seems secure). I have noticed this, but blowing it out with compressed air makes it as good as new. The blade mounting style is superior to my Milwaukee sawzall. On the Makita you rotate the blade lock 45 degrees and it clicks open and stays there. Then you insert the blade with one hand and it automatically rotates back to lock the blade in - so much nicer.

Yes, it uses all the standard blades.

Well worth the price.

"Will not hold the blade" 2009-11-13
By Robb A. Troutman (Lakeside Az.)
I have owned Makita products for years. I would like to say several, but due to the fact they last so long you do not need several. One last for years. I still have an ald 7.4v drill that still works, though the batteries are weak. What do you expect for a 8 year old drill. It really bums me out to have to give this saw only one star, and that is only because it is a Makita. Battery is great, light weight, durable, but will not hold a blade for squat. After it first use the blade kept spitting out. I returned it to a Makita sevice center. This is a nother reason for only one star. After 3 months, I finally got it back. No difference. It still will not hold a blade. I am completely disapointed with the quick change blade holder. My saw came with the kit. If you are looking for a kit, get one without this saw and then go buy a different brand reciprocating saw, perhaps Hitachi. Until Makita gets a clue and fixes this flaw and perhaps do a better turnaround in the service depatment area I will have to look elsewhere for a reciprocating saw that will hold a blade. But I will still buy their drills, impacts, and circular saws.

"A+++ Way to go - Great Portable Saw" 2009-08-26
By Jamie Dolan (Neenah, WI United States)
First off, if you put this side to side with a corded super Sawzall, the Sawzall will win hands down. For what it is, the Makita is a truly amazing product.

Some quick points / comments:

Never had any problems with changing the blades and I regularly get mine full of mud using it with a long blade to cut out tree roots.

The Batteries last about 12 minutes if your using it really hard, and they get very hot and take 30-40 minutes before they are charged again, due to the additional time required to cool them. If your going to really use this saw hard on a regular basis, buy more batteries.

I used this saw with a 12" blade in it to cut down a 47 year old spruce tree when my chain saw wasn't available. It was over 15" thick. Took the saw a while, but it did it.

I've cut metal, plaster, metal lath, 4x4's, lots of conduit, lots of tree trimming / pruning, etc. It's really worked well on all of it.

One suggestion, you get what you pay for in terms of blades. I think the Bosch blades are some of the very best. Lenox blades are also very good, but tend to warp from the heat during heavy use more than the bosch blades do. The Milwaukee blades are pretty decent.

It likely won't replace your super sawzall for really heavy demo work, but for everything else, I think it is just an amazing tool.

"Nice saw with one major problem" 2009-02-02
By DoorGuy (WI)
I've owned many cordless reciprocating saws over the years and this would definitely be at the top of the list if it weren't for the fact that after using it for a short time the blades fall out while sawing! At first I thought I just didn't have them locked in properly, but I tried again several times, each time making sure it was completely locked in and it keeps falling out!!! This is exremely frustrating. Apparently I'm not the only one who's had this problem. I've tried different blades, but it just won't hold them. Otherwise it seems great! Good size, not too heavy, work light and plenty of power. I'm going to try to contact Makita to see if they have any suggestions.

 "Unforgivable" 2009-08-10
By M. C. Fueston (Worthington, MN)
A year after I bought the entire Denali 18v set, the BATTERIES ARE UNAVAILABLE. And the helpful little note from Amazon reads: "not sure if or when this item will be available." Amazon, this is absolutely unforgivable. At the very least, a responsible company would tell us if some other battery will fit the tool. And yet, Amazon still sells the 18v tools as "bare-tool," with no warning that batteries aren't available! And, yeah, after a year, the batteries (I have 2) are pretty much shot. The tool sure used to work nice back when it had batteries, though! I feel sorry for the dude that bought extras.

All Denali Tools have been fantastic, the only concern is longevity. i bought this, used it and loved it so i bought 2 more. i figure at $14 i can buy 5 before i have even touched a dewalt (even then i still have some more money to spend). the blade is par at best, buy good blades and the tool performs.

"Great value, this cost less than a good set of blades for it!" 2008-08-16
By Stephen Cunningham (Northern Michigan)
I own several cordless reciprocating saws, a 36 volt DeWalt, 18 volt DeWalt, a Milwaukee 18 volt and a Milwaukee 18 volt "hatchet". They are all great tools. They have a feeling of quality when you turn them on.

The Denali feels and sounds a little crude by comparison. I have only had the Denali a couple of days, but I have to say using the same Milwaukee and Dewalt blades that I use in my other saws it cuts wood as good as anything I own. I don't know how long it will last, but for what it cost I can buy 4 or 5 of them for the price of an industrial rated name brand tool. I think it is the perfect homeowner saw.

I was impressed enough by its performance that I bought 2 more to have as spares. I know that is nuts but they were very inexpensive.

I used this saw yesterday with a 9" Bosch metal cutting blade to reach behind wall studs and cut the sheathing nails and also to cut the heavy framing nails thet had been used to "sister" the wall studs at this location. This type of use realy puts a strain on the tool. Pushing a 9" blade between a couple of 2x4's creates a lot of drag as does pushing it between the tightly nailed sheathing and the back side of the wall stud with the blade bent at about 45 degrees. I am pleased to say it worked great. Plenty of power and it quickly cut all the connecting nails.

So far I have worn out 3 Milwaukee demolition blades using this saw to do overhead cutting of plaster over plaster board with embedded expanded metal reinforcing. I have worn the teeth completly off the blades but the saw is holding up well so far and sems to have a lot of power. Battery life is better than I expected, considering the amount of work being done.
