Hands down, we love this saw. It's packing as much power as its corded colleagues—-maybe more—-but with the awesome convenience of a cordless. It sacrifices nothing in the way of strength or guts with its 1-inch stroke length and 2,900 strokes per minute. It's relatively lightweight for its power, but the battery does add some heft to it, and that's really the only less-than-perfect feature about it. The keyless blade clamp system lets you change out a blade without even touching the used blade or reciprocating shaft. We like that the open-topped shoe will pivot, so your visibility is never impaired. The trigger is encased in the same hand-friendly compound that wraps the handle grip as well as the front boot grip, and it's total comfort in your hand. We always like a trigger lock for reduced hand fatigue, too, and this one's got it all. Another great feature is that the blade reverses when you're faced with flush or plunge cuts. I am very disappointed with this saw. I buy almost all my tools from amazon and try to research products in depth. This was supposed to be the best, I thought. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because it comes in handy for very small projects or when you need to cut one or two items. For demo or large items I use my tiger saw (corded), it will smoke the Panasonic. I also purchased the panasonic cordless hammer drill, just as disapointed with it. I will stick with porter cable in the future.

Anyone who has tried working with a Sawzall in cramped quarters and making cuts in confined spaces will appreciate the Hatchet's multiposition folding handle, which reduces the tool's length to a mere 13 inches. While this is a truly innovative design for a reciprocating saw, the fact that this is also the first cordless Sawzall with a vibration-reducing counterbalance mechanism should not be overlooked. Bought this one, loved the 90 degree handle, but I was only able to do about 8 long cuts on a kitchen cabinet demo before the battery died. Other reviews had warned about the stock battery being poor and that is correct. I am now going to look for a decent deal on the Lithum Ion battery.

I'm not a heavy user of saws, but the 'manual' saw takes too much effort for even the most minor tasks. (Occasional 2X4, tree branches, wood door. For under $100 (october-2008) this has helped be knock a few more things off my home-improvement-to-do-list. Its a bit heavier than expected and the charge seems to run out more quickly than I expected, but it does the job well and the price is very competitive. It comes with 2 blades.

I purchased the Hatchet because of a job that required a lot of cutting in confined areas and this thing worked great. The ability to pivot the handle and install the blade either up of down proved to be very versatile. I now see why Milwaukee has such a good reputation with their Sawzalls.

I have owned a lot of Makita and DeWalt tools in my life. This is part of the newest LXT Lithium ion-powered tools. This is a great concept, but seriously, 4 of the 6 LXT tools I own have flaws/problems that greatly impact their utility.

The problem with this recip saw is that the shoe just plain does not work. It is only decorative. It will not hold. This is an important function when you are trying to use a certain part of the blade or to adjust the depth to keep the blade from, say, punching through the drywall on the other side of the wall.

Also, the blade quick release is marginal. You really have to give it a good forceful close and wiggle to make sure it is locked in there. I have not had problems with blades coming loose/out, but others have. FWIW, I use exclusively Milwaukee blades.

Sadly, if you look at the price of $75 to $100 for this or the compact version (BJR182), then think about the hassle to ship this to a service center and back and then not have them fix it (because it is a basic design flaw), then you'll understand that they truly don't make 'em like they used to.

This product has 5 stars because Makita has a good product here. Then there is me. . . picking at the details. I have owned this saw for 4 years now, it has undergone daily use for 2 full years of the 4. I have only one complaint about this saw and a few requests/questions for future models.

My only complaint, and I have not seen any one else mention this, is that the blade guard is not a solid mechanism and slips back when pressure is applied. I hope that Makita can remedy this small oversight in future models.

Another question is can this tool be made any more compact? I have also noticed that a corded model Makita recipro-saw has some kind of anti vibration technology, can this be applied in some measure to the cordless?

This saw is still going strong and dispite the improvements I would like to see it is a staple of the cordless tool kit, powerful, light, love the hook and the light. It is a 5 star out of the competition but it needs tweeked to be the absolute best that it can be.

Unless the hook is important to you [62 dollars important] the BJR182 is a better deal. In addition to not having the hook, BJR182 has a slightly different handle and does not have the LED headlights. Same motor and transmission. I got mine for eighty bucks here on Amazon: Makita BJR182Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Recipro Saw. I suspect these come from dealers who break down kits to get you the awesome price (I consider that excellent service) since Makita states that the BJR182 is the kits-only version of the tool. By the way the saw is very substantial and powerful because of the new cordless battery technology. I have been conditioned to expect cordless to mean wimpy but that is not the case here.

"Perfect Size Saw" 2009-09-06

This is a very good saw. It will do all the small jobs you would expect it to do. The surprise is that it will cut a 4X6 in less then 55 seconds. The blade I used for this test was a Ridgid Rapid Demolition blade. So its not going to replace a 10-15 amp fullsize saw but It can do a fullsize job anytime you need it to.

There is a video circulating on the net, showing this saw taking almost two minutes to cut a 4X6. This video also compares it to larger Dewalt. All I can say, is try it yourself, because mine cut a fir 4X6 with ease in less then half that time and barely got warm.

This saw has a short 1/2 inch stroke like most compacts do. The reason for this short stroke is for the smaller jobs, that this saw is made for. It allows for tighter clearences when doing wall outlets etc. For heavy cutting like a 4X6 it needs about a 4tpi blade so it can clean itself as it cuts. A finer tooth blade in thick wood give you a distorted performance image of what the saw really can do. The blade needs to match the stroke of the saw and, the material of course to.

I did a lot of shopping before buying this saw and feel this one covers the most cutting situations. The Milwaukee Hackzaw is easier to handle for smaller jobs and a fullsize will cut thick material faster, but this one lands right in the middle. The safety trigger lockout button is a little clumsy.

This seems to be a individual tool from a set that Ridgid sells at Home Depot. I didn't want or need the whole set. Mine came in perfect new condition with a manual and a metal cutting blade, wrapped in plastic. I got mine from the Locomodem seller with overnight shipping for about $119 (shipping about $30) At the time Locomoden was the only seller that could overnite it to me.

I would recommend this saw easily.

We carry one on every truck and remove hundreds of Catalytic converter's off the scrap cars we move every month. Never been let down once .These saws are the best in my opinion. Old habits are hard to break. I've been using a Milwaukee 18-Volt NiCd Sawzall for years. Every time I thought about upgrading, I would go the cheaper route and buy another 18-Volt battery. It would die. I would buy another battery. Please, if you are caught in this trap, don't do like I did. Take the high road. The new V-28 Lithium-Ion tools are fantastic and you will not regret it. Awesome power and long-lasting batteries that indicate how much charge is left. I now have an 18-Volt NiCd-antique for a garage sale. However, considering the small change I could get for it, I'll probably keep it and hang it on the wall in the wordshop as a reminder that cheaper isn't always better. Besides, Milwaukee Sawzalls are the best looking saws in the parade, even the old ones.

I've owned the V28 Sawzall kit for a couple months and it's already paid for itself with all the work it has saved me. The pruning blade makes it easy to saw off tree limbs, and topping, shaping trees. No cord to get in the way.

I needed to saw off a section of a 4" pipe made of 1/8" aluminum for a mailbox pole. "The Torch" blade made short work of that. I could have spent 20 minutes using a hacksaw and gotten a ragged cut. But the Sawzall did it effortlessly in about 2 minutes with nice clean cut.

You can do just about anything with just two power tools: the Sawzall for heavy work and the Dremel for light stuff.
