"One glaring fundamental design flaw for industrial user." 2010-09-22
By R. Dick (Tulsa, OK USA)
This is the second DeWalt 18v reciprocating saw I have owned. I am an industrial fencing contractor by trade and use these saws to cut though lots of 1 5/8" O.D. Sch. 40 top rail and when needed 2 3/8" O.D. Sch. 40 post as well. From a power stand point both saws performed very well. My first saw was an older version then this one and it lasted me several years of hard cutting and hard use. By the nature of the work it isn't uncommon for me to partially drop the saw on the ground after use as long as I'm not on concrete and the first saw survived this well and often was dirty and muddy. Eventually one of the contacts for the battery completely broke off and when I looked for a replacement part I seen that it was $55.00 because DeWalt has the battery contacts integrated with the control switch, which also happened to be a more complicated reversing switch used in a drill. This design may save them a tiny bit of initial production money, but it's ridiculous to service since you can buy a new saw for $115.00. With my electrical engineering back ground I scoured every source and part book I could think of looking to buy the switch from the original manufacturer, or to find a possible work around of the contacts given a few modifications and couldn't come up with anything viable. I think I may encapsulate the contacts in a soft silicone, keeping where the battery plugs in clear of course, to help isolate them from vibration and excessive movement.

Now onto the current saw. This saw has one important difference with my old one. The new one doesn't have extra material that flairs out and around to support the entire top of the battery. Some of the customer imaged show a used saw that has the feature I am speaking of. This new saw lasted about 1/10th the use of the older saw before a battery contact became bent and now it needs to be replaced, so I now have two DeWalt saws that are in perfect working order except for needing a ridiculously priced $55.00 battery contact replacement, and the second saw almost looks to be engineered to fail quicker since the battery is held less securely then the older model it is only natural that vibration, falls and bumps will destroy the contacts ability to keep pressure on the battery, but of course, there's almost no way they'd fail under warranty, and likely won't fail for the legions of DIY users out there that worship DeWalt, and in exchange DeWalt may save $0.05 in plastic on each saw by removing the extra support. I'm think I may buy some long blades for the DeWalt jig saw I have and see how it cuts pipe, being it will cut a 2x4 faster then the reciprocating saw because it has oribital blade action, it maybe a better all around tool in situations where it's size and shape doesn't get in the way.

"Not a replacement for a corded model..." 2010-09-20
By Mark
I have both this saw and the coded Dewalt reciprocating saw. I generally like Dewalt tools but I can't recommend this one. One would expect a difference in power between the corded and cordless model, but there is another very fundamental difference. Let me explain with an example of how I tried to use these saws yesterday. I was replacing a window in my house with glass block which required me to increase the size of the opening in the house by about 1.5". To do this, I decided that I needed to saw (rip) through a layer of dry wall, a 2x4 in the 3.5" dimension, and a 1/2" fiber board. I needed to rip off 3/4 of an inch along each 5' side.

I first tried with the cordless model. It would cut through wall, but jumped and rattled so badly that the cut was very very rough and it jumped so much that it destroyed the drywall. I then switched to the corded model. It smoothly and cleanly sliced through the wall. No comparison at all. My net is that if you don't absolutely need a cordless model, go for the corded one and the Dewalt is a good choice there.

I bought this saw to replace my 5 year old DeWalt saw (it died) that I use on the job. I was impressed by the new saw's features, in particular the tool less blade receptacle that will take the blades in the standard vertical position but also has an added receptacle that accepts the blades horizontally. The shoe can be adjusted in 3 positions out from the saw as well. These are handy features that my old saw lacked.

A sawzall without a cord is a handy tool to have. I have used it quite a bit so far for prunning tree limbs. I love the fact that you can mount the blade in four different positions. A sawzall is one of those tools that when you need one there is no substitute. Dewalt quality is very good.

 "Disposable Junk" 2009-11-26
By Bud
I have owned a lot of Makita and DeWalt tools in my life. This is part of the newest LXT Lithium ion-powered tools. This is a great concept, but seriously, 4 of the 6 LXT tools I own have flaws/problems that greatly impact their utility.

The problem with this recip saw is that the shoe just plain does not work. It is only decorative. It will not hold. This is an important function when you are trying to use a certain part of the blade or to adjust the depth to keep the blade from, say, punching through the drywall on the other side of the wall.

Also, the blade quick release is marginal. You really have to give it a good forceful close and wiggle to make sure it is locked in there. I have not had problems with blades coming loose/out, but others have. FWIW, I use exclusively Milwaukee blades.

Sadly, if you look at the price of $75 to $100 for this or the compact version (BJR182), then think about the hassle to ship this to a service center and back and then not have them fix it (because it is a basic design flaw), then you'll understand that they truly don't make 'em like they used to.

 "details details" 2009-09-07
By Timothy D. Courage
This product has 5 stars because Makita has a good product here. Then there is me. . . picking at the details. I have owned this saw for 4 years now, it has undergone daily use for 2 full years of the 4. I have only one complaint about this saw and a few requests/questions for future models.

My only complaint, and I have not seen any one else mention this, is that the blade guard is not a solid mechanism and slips back when pressure is applied. I hope that Makita can remedy this small oversight in future models.

Another question is can this tool be made any more compact? I have also noticed that a corded model Makita recipro-saw has some kind of anti vibration technology, can this be applied in some measure to the cordless?

This saw is still going strong and dispite the improvements I would like to see it is a staple of the cordless tool kit, powerful, light, love the hook and the light. It is a 5 star out of the competition but it needs tweeked to be the absolute best that it can be.

"BJR182 "Z" is available for nearly half the price" 2009-06-30
By schunacher (California)
Unless the hook is important to you [62 dollars important] the BJR182 is a better deal. In addition to not having the hook, BJR182 has a slightly different handle and does not have the LED headlights. Same motor and transmission. I got mine for eighty bucks here on Amazon: Makita BJR182Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Recipro Saw. I suspect these come from dealers who break down kits to get you the awesome price (I consider that excellent service) since Makita states that the BJR182 is the kits-only version of the tool. By the way the saw is very substantial and powerful because of the new cordless battery technology. I have been conditioned to expect cordless to mean wimpy but that is not the case here.

Strangely not offered as a separate product by the company, I got this from Amazon and have been deeply satisfied. We were in the middle of a bathroom remodeling, and only regret is not getting this sooner.

Light, cuts more than a few pieces before you need to recharge the battery, and VERY easy to handle.

 "Ridgid 18V Fuego One-Handed Reciprocating Saw" 2010-07-03
By SchnabelJS
Product is one of the most valuable tools I have. Lots of power when used with the 3W hour battery pack, although if I need to work in a tight space with not much leverage, I'll switch to the 1.5W hour battery pack which is lighter and smaller. Great design with a very slim long profile allows you to get into tight spaces. Works with long or short blades. If you're cutting something that isn't locked or nailed down and you have a long tooth blade, as with any reciprocating saw, the thing you're cutting will vibrate quite a bit. Don't try to over power the piece being cut, switch to a smaller tooth blade which will cause the thing your cutting to vibrate considerably less. The saw has a high RPM so it will still cut through things very quickly even with a short tooth blade. While it is variable, which sometimes can be frustrating, it really seems to have 3 cutting rates, slow, medium and fast, and the range of pull on the throttle makes it easy to keep at any one of these cutting rates. Again, one of the best tools I have. And it was less than $100 by itself, without any battery. Search for just the saw, otherwise you have to buy it in a kit with a bunch of other tools you probably already have or don't really need. You can find 1.5W hour or 3.0W hour batteries online as well. I bought a slightly used one for $50 instead of the typical $85 to $100 and it works great!

0 Milwaukee 0719-22 V28 Sawzall Lithium Ion Cordless Reciprocating Saw Kit

Review Milwaukee 0719-22 V28 Sawzall Lithium Ion Cordless Reciprocating Saw Kit

Buy Cheap Milwaukee 0719-22 V28 Sawzall Lithium Ion Cordless Reciprocating Saw Kit From Here Now!

The Milwaukee Sawzall has been the reciprocating saw of choice for professional contractors since 1951, and that’s not going to change anytime soon. The latest member of the legendary Sawzall line, the new Milwaukee 0719-22 Sawzall V28 Lithium Cordless Reciprocating Saw Kit, takes the cutting power, performance and reliability pro users and serious do-it-yourselfers have come to expect from Milwaukee, and combines it with the added bonus of cut-anywhere cordless convenience.

The 0719 Sawzall is powered by a 28-volt Lithium-Ion battery that weighs less than a standard 18-volt Ni-Cad battery, yet delivers twice the run time. As a result, you can cut faster and longer with less fatigue and fewer battery changes. The tool weighs just 9.4 pounds with the battery installed. And the batteries are reversible, a feature that’s exclusive to Milwaukee tools. They can slide on from either direction, which allows you to counterbalance the tool’s weight depending on the battery placement.

The saw’s variable-speed motor has two speed ranges: 0-2,000 strokes per minute (spm), and 0-3,000 spm, allowing you to choose the most efficient cutting speed for the job. And the tool’s superior 1 1/8-in. blade stroke ensures fast cutting with less motor strain. Other performance-enhancing features found on the 0719 include the Quik-Lok blade clamp for tool-free blade changes, a keyless shoe adjustment, soft-grip handle that dampens fatigue-producing vibration, and a gear-protecting clutch for improved durability. And each battery is equipped with an illuminated "fuel" gauge, so you’ll know when recharging is necessary.

When fitted with the appropriate blade, the saw will cut through virtually any building material, including wood, drywall, plaster, asphalt roof shingles, plastic pipe, nail-embedded wood, copper tubing, fiberglass and most metals. A reciprocating saw is an indispensable tool for demolition work, remodeling projects, new-home construction, deck building, plumbing and electrical jobs, and heating and air conditioning installations. --Joseph Truini

After getting what I thought was best, I started to read reviews. I decided to spend the extra money and bought a Milwaukee at Amazon. I am doing a lot of clearing of mostly Oak trees up to 6", some pine and cedar. I use the Milwaukee pruning blades that give me excellent service. The two finger trigger is a plus as is the ease of using the off switch. The saw is well built but heavier than my other saws. It took a little practice to get used to the rotating blade locking collar. I can highly recommend this saw.

I replaced my Milwaukee nicad set with the new M18 kit and this sawzall is the worst product I've ever used from Milwaukee. It literally beats conduit to death before it cuts it. Very rough use. Might work good on wood but so does a hatchet. The switch has been flakey since I bought it.

The hammer drill and flashlight work pretty well and the batteries do last a long time.

I'd rather cut pipe with my hand hacksaw and leave this in the truck (and I have on many occasions).

The only thing I would change is that this should be a kit with 2 batteries and the charger since the price is already at a premium. The shipping is great as always from Amazon.

 "Awesome sawzall!" 2009-04-01
By Marty
This saw is awesome! It seems to have more power than a regular 18V, but the best thing is the lithium ion battery with the "fuel gauge" right on the battery that lets you know how much charge is left in the battery. This M18 battery will go and go and go full blast until it loses all charge and then it stops. Probably wouldn't hurt to have a spare battery if you'll be using it for a big job and don't want to have to wait the 30-50 minutes it might take to recharge the battery. I used it to cut a bunch of branches for about 2 hours and I still had juice left in the battery. This saw had more than enough power for what I use it for (small trees, branches, 2x4s with and without nails, wood fence demo, etc.), and the Milwaukee name gives me a feeling of quality. I highly recommend this saw not just because it's a workhorse, it also looks cool!

 "Bad switch" 2009-01-12
By Gerald Scott (Simi Valley, CA)
The switch lasted less than a month and was only used on three different occasions not even enough to wear the paint off the blade.

 "Very Versatile Saw" 2010-05-25
By ironhead3 (Old North State)
I do electrical work and have owned 2 or 3 of these saws over a number of years. They are great for detailed work. You can have your jig saw, I will take this Makita cordless saw anytime. I highly recommend this saw.

"Makita 4390DW Recipro saw Kit" 2009-10-24
By P. Johnson (USA)
I own this Kit. Comes with saw, bat, charger (NIMH and NiCad, 7.2 to 14 volt), and two blades, #78 for wood, and #71 for metal. Inserting the blade is a bit tedious, compared to the Milwaukee 12v Hacksall, that I also use. I bought this saw Kit because I have two drills and a mini circle saw that use the same platform. Saw is very handy for a quick cut, no "Jitter" if held firmly.

"One of my best tools" 2009-09-29
By 1/2 Canadian
I've had this saw since 1995, and admittedly only use it a few times a year for home projects. However it uses the same battery as my Makita angle drill, which makes it super convenient. Its portability is one of its most positive aspects, just as with the drill. After 14 years, I finally broke one of its saw blades today, cutting through aluminum channel metal, which is tricky to keep from twisting and stressing the blade.

That's one of the negatives here... the blades are not standard reciprocating saw blades, but rather oversized jig saw blades, for all intents. Limited power = limited blade size and capability. Not that this rig doesn't have plenty of power, because it does. But that's why it can snap a blade; so a modicum of caution is advised - don't overreach the shorter blade throw, nor cut too cockeyed a line. And wear safety glasses cuz my blade broke off the tip as well as broke at the base, and that tip went aflying across the garage.

That leads to the only other negative. Finding replacement blades is no piece of cake if you want them from a stick built store. Plenty available online though. All that negative aside, I'd recommend this rig to any friend or acquaintance. And I'd buy another myself if I needed one, because it is so easy to take anywhere (upstairs, downstairs, to the yard or shed) and use without worrying about a darned cord, and it makes a lot quicker work of steel cutting projects than a hack saw; as long as you control its power and don't force the cut of the blade. On its own in not too thick a steel, it will buzz through like it was butter. Like any recipro, the width of the guide foot can complicate closesness of cut, but that inconvenience doesn't overshadow the great overall usefullness of this very handy tool.

 "It's a Finish Reciprocating Saw" 2009-03-14
By J. Lee
I use this tool for cutting conduit, steel/aluminum tubing, bolts. The great thing about this tool is that you can use it with one hand and still have great precision and control of the tool because the trigger is only 5" from the blade instead of way in the back. Your hand grips the center of mass of the tool and it's amazing how light and balanced it feels in your hand. This saw is a scalpel and more suited towards finish cutting than the larger recipro saws. I've cut up to 4" conduit with this tool, so it is no slouch. The short stroke of the blade allows you to get into some pretty tight places while minimizing collateral damage. It is one of my favorite tools. The only thing I'd change about the tool is convert over to 12V and some of the newer batteries, but keep the overall shape and size.

How did I survive without this one! Sure to be a classic in my Hall of Tool Museum. I love Makita's, especially if made in Japan. This is made in Canada, so I have faith they did it right. Now, I have the whole line. So much better than a sabre or sawzall.....
